Development (BCED)
The University of Minnesota Office for Business and Community Economic
Development (BCED) is a department dedicated to the economic growth
and development of Minnesota communities. The goal of the BCED is
to create programs that create opportunities for businesses owned
by individuals historically and currently underrepresented.

BCED's Mission
The mission of the University of Minnesota's Office for Business &
Community Economic Development is to contribute to the economic growth
and development of Minnesota communities.
Through successful collaboration and partnerships with government,
private enterprise and community organizations, the University will
work cooperatively to:
- Provide training and employment opportunities for community residents
in the skilled trades professions.
- Develop strategies and implement programs to promote diversity
in hiring and purchasing decisions made at the University.
- Promote business opportunities, capacity building, and job expansion
for businesses owned by women, people of color, and people with
disabilities.
- Apply the resources of the University to stimulate economic growth
and development of communities.
- Form economic partnerships and strategic alliances with corporations,
government, and community organizations to foster economic diversification,
entrepreneurial expansion, and new business starts and job creation.
Moreover, it is the University's goal to stimulate socioeconomic empowerment
within diverse communities by establishing initiatives and programs
that create opportunities for businesses owned by individuals historically
and currently underrepresented.
BCED maintains a list of Certified Small Businesses called the University
of Minnesota Directory for the Central Certification (CERT) Program.
