United States Customs Requirements

As the owner of the goods, it is feasible for you, the University department, to enter your own merchandise through U.S. Customs; however, the process is bureaucratic. For a complete list of all customs requirements visit the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection homepage.

If you are unfamiliar with the U.S. Customs procedures, Purchasing Services recommends that you use the University's contracted customs broker, Schenker International (U-Wide Contract #U225.1) or Scan Global Logistics (U-Wide Contract #U225.2). A fee is required for their service, but their expertise can save an inexperienced importer both time and money in the long run.

To ensure the smoothest process possible for any Department Purchase Orders issued to Foreign Vendors, the following procedure is suggested:

In the text portion of your Purchase Order (PO), insert the following statement:

"When equipment is ready to ship, please contact our Import/Export Broker, Karie Kager or Mark Toth at Schenker International, Phone: (651) 367-8816 or Rasmus Nielsen or Nicole Krogh at Scan Global Logistics at (630) 616-8800."

Fax a copy of the PO to Karie Kager or Mark Toth at Fax: (651) 270-2536 or Rasmus Nielsen or Nicole Krogh at Fax: (630) 616-8801. That way when and if any of the representatives gets contacted by the vendor and/or U.S. Customs, they will have the information on your order close at hand.
